The Master of Computing (Advanced) is a premier postgraduate computing degree for students who want to develop their knowledge and skills by studying advanced computing courses and undertaking research in one of the many sub-fields of computing in which the ANU School of Computing has world-leading expertise. The 2 year full time (or equivalent part-time) program targets students who wish to enter industry in an R&D or leadership role, enhance their existing computing knowledge or can be used as a pathway to a PhD. The degree is accredited by the Australian Computer Society.Master of Computing (Advanced) graduates will deepen their existing knowledge and understanding of professional software development and computing practices. Students have the opportunity to participate in many cutting-edge courses and, depending upon their background and interests, are likely to choose to specialise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer systems and architecture, human-centred design, software development, data science or theoretical computer science. The program culminates in a capstone individual research project requiring students to complete a substantial research thesis.Students may be awarded up to 48 units of credit. The number of units of credit a student receives will be determined on a case by case basis and will be influenced by their background and focus of their earlier studies.

Academic Advice

Semester 1 starters should enrol in courses in both the First and Second Semesters and can change their Semester 2 courses all the way until July.

Before selecting what courses to enrol in, you should read CSS advice on enrolling and check the Computing Course Substitutions webpage.

Electives

Electives must be Postgraduate courses and can be found by searching Postgraduate courses on Programs and Courses.

Before selecting electives, please read the enrolment pattern in the Study tab to see how many electives you may choose and where they fit in your program. A minimum of 48 units must come from completion of 8000-level COMP courses, or non-COMP courses listed included in the Specialisations.

When choosing elective courses, check the course listing on Programs and Courses to ensure that you have the required and assumed knowledge before enrolling. If you do not, consider changing your planned enrolment to make sure you take the pre-requisite course(s).

Specialisations

Students are required to complete a specialisation and should follow specialisation lists as specified in the Academic Year that they commenced their degree.

Please select the appropriate year from the drop down box at the top right of the page to see specialisation lists and details that apply to you on the 'Study Tab.

Check the pre-requisites for the courses in your chosen specialisation, 8000-level courses normally require specific 6000-level courses to have been completed. Many courses only run once per year.

Advanced Computing Research Project

This is a 24 unit research project taken in your second year over two consecutive semesters.

In your first year, take some time to consider what you would like to do for this capstone project and explore current research in the School of Computing by browsing the Project Opportunities website; talking to your lecturers, the VCOMP convenor, tutors, and other students who have done projects; and filtering the School of Computing’s People page by your area of interest to find possible supervisors.

Credit/Exemptions

Students may be able to obtain an exemption or credit for some of the introductory courses included in the core.

Applying for status involves a rigorous evidence-based check to determine whether we have sufficient confidence that you have achieved the learning outcomes of the course to a sufficient level.

Instructions on how to apply for credit/exemptions can be found here. Applications must be submitted by listed deadlines.

Where a student has received credit for courses, a maximum of one credited course may be counted towards a specialisation.

A maximum of 6 units of credited 8000-level courses can count towards the minimum 24 unit of 8000-level courses program requirement.

Exempted courses do NOT count towards a specialisation.

Courses for which you receive an exemption should be replaced by elective COMP courses. You need to seek permission to replace exempted courses with non-COMP courses.

Any awarded course credit counts towards the unit requirements of your program and may shorten the length of your degree. If the duration of your degree is shortened, international students electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) will be revised to reflect the new end date of the degree. This may have implications on your visa conditions. Students are advised to contact the Department of Home affairs for more information.
